We need Laboratory results to pull current patient demographics instead of demographics at time of order/results. We had a patient in the ER who registration mistakenly registered him under his twin brother's name and the CBC was ran/resulted before registration had fixed the name so now permanently that lab result anytime it is printed will pull the incorrect name even though the account was fixed pretty quickly. This means it also does this for any John/Jane Doe accounts that get name fixed later. Permanently those lab results state John Doe even if later on you get the correct name.
Per our compliance team: This is not a change we will pursue due to the legality of maintaining the integrity of electronic health records.
Further information on this, when a result is complete other functions occur such as report distribution so while the name on the result is incorrect, we must keep the record in tact in case the need ever arises that we need to go back and review the record as it was at the time the result was finalized. The order needs to have an addendum/corrected report issued to alert anyone downstream who may have been sent the result. Then it can be canceled which will remove it from the portal. If the issue is caught before the result is finalized, the result can be deleted and sent back in via the IF or be re-resulted. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause for your facility.
Furthermore, The change would have a significant impact on legitimate patients that experienced legal name changes due to marriage or divorce. We must preserve the name on file at the time of the treatment.
We also have seen that issue, and it needs to be fixed.
