I believe that it would be useful if pts code status would follow them to all visits. when we place someone in the computer for the ER and it stated that they are a full code because the system does not keep the code status is hard for our providers and new staff that are not aware it doesn't stay with them.
"Do not resuscitate in hospital generally only applies to the length of a single hospital stay and must be reaffirmed with each visit. The temporary nature is meant to allow patients who are in changing health conditions to make decisions that are appropriate for their current situation but allow for built-in updates should their health outlook change." The ID Panel states to Assume Full Code until the patient's wishes are known. Remember that the Code Status History is available from the Demographics screen by selecting the patient's portrait.
We totally agree that the Code Status should carry forward. It is frustrating and time consuming to have to look up the patient's wishes and put in a new order at every visit to make sure the status is current. Patients do not fill out a new advanced directive at every visit, so why should a new order be needed every time? Visiting with Dr. Louks at the National Client Conference, he was amazed that it didn't carry forward.
A new order is required for each account. However, the Code Status History is available.
